BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying

Overview

This full-time programme in UK, is delivered in part-time mode of study in Sri Lanka, and is made up of four modules each worth 30 credit points. A student must complete all 120 credits. The duration of this programme is one year.

This Quantity Surveying BSc (Hons) final year course is designed for those wishing to undertake a challenging programme of study which will enable them to educate in depth many aspects of the construction sector with a view to entering into a career in construction both within the private practice and contracting sector and most likely to seek to qualify as a Chartered Surveyor. The course embraces recent developments in education and industry and the curriculum and teaching benefits from the research interests of the academic staff.

Intake is normally in September. The minimum entry qualifications for the programme is a Pearson BTEC HND in Construction and the Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) or equivalent. The candidates has to produce evidence of English language competence in accordance with the University’s standard policy (viz. a credit pass at GCE-O/L) and may be required to attend a bridging programme.

Suitable for

  • G.C.E. A/L (Local), London A/L, IB (International Baccalaureate) or equivalent in Mathematics / Biology / Engineering Technology / Commerce Streams + Minimum Credit Pass in English at G.C.E O/L Examination.
  • A recognised Diploma or equivalent vocational qualification in the relevant field + Minimum Credit Passin English at G.C.E O/L Examination.

Programme Structure

CE6106 – Project Management (Credits – 30)

This module aims to help you explore the principles and theories of project management applied in the context of construction. It introduces you to project management standards and
documentation and reviews the project manager’s role throughout the project lifecycle. The module places emphasis on project planning and control techniques. It further considers a rangeof soft skills project managers need to posses to lead and manage project teams effectively. The module is taught by a series of lectures and workshops and you will be expected to take an active part in applying to worked examples within the workshop format. Assessment is by coursework and an examination.

CE6102 – Consultancy (Credits – 30)

This module integrates knowledge and skills you acquired in the complete suite of modules of this programme. It enables you to develop a deeper understanding of cross subject synergies.
The module provides the framework for advanced practical applications of quantity surveying knowledge and skills into consultancy practice scenarios. You will learn how to develop and18 implement a consultancy strategy and provide reasoned advice and complete solutions to clients on a wide range of issues. You will be expected to think strategically, innovate and develop your own skills awareness and development needs. The module is delivered by keynote lectures and workshops. Assessment is by coursework including a brief based on a short residential field trip.

LP6105 – Professional Practice in Context(Credits -30)

This module builds on your existing knowledge of the law and professional practice related to your subject-specific route and further develops your analytical and critical skills whenencountering legal and professional practice problems. Knowledge of professional liability law is developed together with other aspects of professional practice ethical, legal and due diligence requirements. This module also ensures that you have developed a holistic understanding of sustainability as it applies to built environment professional practice. The module is taught by a series of lectures and practical skills based application seminars. Assessment is by coursework assignments, one of which normally includes oral argument and debate.

LP6107 – Individual Project and Research Methods(Credits -30)

The Research Project is a compulsory 30 credit module for all students on surveying and planning undergraduate programmes. It provides an opportunity for each student in their final year of study to initiate, design and execute a small scale research project under supervision. Students will have the opportunity to study in-depth a relevant topic which they find particularly stimulating and to further develop and practice their research skills which they have acquired at earlier levels of their programme of study.

In undertaking the work they should demonstrate knowledge and competence in reviewing literature and in using one or more of a range of research methods to collect and analyse data and draw well-founded conclusions. To support the student a series of lectures in research methods is given and individual one-to-one supervision ensures that the student is supported in the process. Assessment is by submission of an interim assessment and the completed Project. An oral defence either at the interim stage or final submission will form part of the process, thereby checking understanding and assessing the student’s ability to articulate their ideas and knowledge. Students who are studying part time may undertake a project that relates to their workplace if deemed appropriate. The project will provide an opportunity for students to synthesise all their learning from the programme and is the final Capstone project. This project, together with their Capstone Projects in their route specific module and the Level 5 major project ensures students have integrated their learning and have developed a particular skill and expertise relevant to their future employability.
